Japan is an island country in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean.

In its archipelago consisting of nearly 7,000 islands, the 4 main (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu) represent over 95% of the land area.

From a geographical point of view, Japan is divided into 9 regions from north to south: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai (also called Kinki), Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa. Politically, there are 47 prefectures.

127 million Japanese people live in a territory that stretches over 3,000 kilometers long and 378 000 km², where the mountains occupy 71%. Coasts extend over 30,000 kilometers.

The Tokyo metropolis, which includes the capital and the neighboring prefectures, is the largest in the world with over 37 million inhabitants in what is called the 'greater Tokyo'. The other most populous cities in Japan are, in order: Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kobe, Kyoto and Fukuoka.

Japan is the 11th most inhabited country in the world. However, with a very low birth rate, the country has been in demographic decline for many years.
