Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is ninja-themed show performed in the heart of Kabukicho, Shinjuku’s entertainment district in the west of Tokyo. The 80-minutes long immersive sound and light performance is a blend of traditional Japanese cultural elements, with a contemporary twist to better suit a larger international audience.

Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is hosted in a room of the Warp Shinjuku night club, in the very touristy entertainment district of Kabukicho, in the north of Shinjuku JR station and close to the Gracery Hotel 🏨 (the one surmounted by Gozilla’s head). Several shows are held every day on weekdays, for a small 50 spectators crowd at the basement floor.

The concept of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo

The show premiered in August 2024 and is aiming at combining several types of traditional Japanese arts, with a new take to make them more accessible to a wider audience. It is produced by Denjiro Tanaka, a Kabuki music master, who is both a performer and a composer descendant of a long line of musicians for Noh and Kabuki theaters.

Consequently, the show Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo includes performances of:

  • Wadaiko Japanese drums;
  • Sword fighting;
  • Nihon buyo traditional dance; and,
  • A display of ninja techniques.

The show is supported by the Japan Ninja Council, a recently founded organization to promote tourism based on the ninja, their folklore and the culture they represent.

The play doesn’t have dialogues, relying on the comedians’ performance to convey the story-line, with sometimes the projection of a few English keywords to highlight the plot. Therefore, speaking Japanese is not necessary and spectators from all origins and ages can feel absorbed in the play.

When tradition meets modernity

The small room in Warp Shinjuku’s basement can host from 50 to 100 spectators. Simple seats are arranged facing a modern stage, with a white background on which are projected videos and special effects.

The plot of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is based on a very popular myth in Japan and is Asia broadly speaking: the rivalry of the tiger and the dragon. The 2 creatures, also prominent in Chinese astrology, respectively represent the principles of yin and yang, that are both opposed to each other and complementary. This duality is represented through beautiful and simple costumes, of clear colors for the dragon and dark ones for the tiger.

The show offers a variety of scenes, with very dynamic moments of fierce and sensational fights, and quieter scenes where the comedians can fully express their acting talents, backed by soundtracks of traditional music and drums.

The production skillfully mixes traditional arts, the universe of ninja warriors and theatrical drama. The codes of Kabuki theater constitute the baseline, with typical postures, make-up, shouting and exaggerated facial expressions, but in a more modern and dynamic way.

Light plays, video projections and a powerful sound system allow for spectators to be completely immersed in the action. The room is of a moderate size providing a proximity with actors and acrobats, especially through fights that can start on the stage and continue in the alleys, close enough to the spectators so that they may hear the rustle of sword wielding.

We highly recommend this original show that can add a both cultural and entertaining touch to the visit of one of the most touristic areas of the capital. While the ninja figure may seem a bit of a cliché, any doubt is swept away by an often breathtaking action. Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is a show that easily entertain groups of friends or families, even with children. The action-packed 80 minutes long don’t feel sluggish or dragging at all.
