Muji Ginza Flagship Store
Minimalist Lifestyle in the Heart of the Posh District
Muji Ginza Flagship Store is the largest shop of the Japanese brand as well as its flagship in the country. Opened in 2019, it is spreading on a 10-stories building in the heart of Ginza, the historical luxury shopping district in the south-east of Tokyo, where every significant brand must have its own store.
Muji Ginza Flagship Store is the main shop of MUJI, opened since April 2019 in Ginza, and is the successor of the former flagship store that used to be in the nearby Yurakucho district. It displays the brandās whole range of products in the worldās largest MUJI store.
MUJIās minimalist concept
MUJI appeared in the early 1980s, created by Seiyu supermarkets that started by selling about 40 of its products. At the end of the 2000s 30 years later, its line of products includes more than 7,000 items, from their initial home goods to clothing, and even construction (MUJI House) or the creation of a limited edition carĀ š (MUJI Car 1.000) in collaboration with Nissan.
Today, MUJI owns more than 1,100 shops in the world, 562 of which are in Japan and 11 in the US (mostly in New York City, NYC).
MUJIās style and name are strongly related : MUJI is the shortening for Mujirushi Ryohin (ē”å°čÆå) that means "quality product without a brand". True to their name, MUJI products show a minimalist design and voluntarily forsake any kind of logo, both to foster savings in their making and to please customers who enjoy simple products.
Sobriety and the attention to waste reduction also includes the packaging, that often consists of only a price tag, and the variations of products are limited. As for their quality, MUJI favors materials with a sustainable production, especially in the textile lines, or materials sourced from recycling as in its stationery.
The largest MUJI store in the world
The unflashy glassed front of Muji Ginza Flagship Store is holding a large part of Namiki-dori avenue, and its entrance is marked by a massive red square inscribed with MUJI letters. Aside its size, the department store has 3 characteristics rarely seen in its Western counterparts:
- A comprehensive grocery store spreading on the whole ground floor (1F). This little supermarket in the heart of the luxury district has a green grocery aisle (fruits and vegetables from Japan), a frozen food aisle and a wholesale aisle for coffee and tea in bulk, dried food (pasta), packs of ready-made meals and various snacks as well as freshly made bentoĀ š± boxes, all produced by the brand and wrapped in simple and minimalist packagings. There is also a bakery ideally placed by the windows, that makes its own products on site; a restaurant MUJI Diner at the basement floor (B1F); a coffee shop and a Japanese restaurant WA at the 6F.
- An art gallery, ATELIER MUJI GINZA, with 2 temporary exhibition rooms, also at the 6F; and,
- MUJI HotelĀ šØ Ginza, whose lobby is at the 6F floor and spreads on the 4 upper floors. It is the 3rd hotel of the brand, but the 1rst in Japan, established in the upscale business hotels category. It has 79 rooms, some of which can be very narrow (about 2 meters wide), and with superficies varying from 14 to 52 sqm. It is naturally fully furnished with MUJI products, with a particular taste for natural materials and wood.
Floors 2F to 5F display the usual range of MUJI products: home goods (Japanese cooking utensils, furniture, textile), clothing (women, men and children), stationery and travel goods.
Muji Ginza Flagship Store offers a full experience of the logoless brand in a more sophisticated and slightly luxurious environment in tune with its neighborhood. Its clear wood and neutral color tones setting creates a relaxing atmosphere for a break in the hustle and bustle of Ginza.
