Kichijoji Petit Mura
The Fairy-Tale Cottage Village in Tokyo's Thrift-Shop District
Kichijoji Petit Mura is a miniature village of cat-themed shops and cafés located in the Kichijoji district in western Tokyo. Its colorful, quirky architecture, straight out of a fairy tale or a Ghibli film, offers a sweet, kawaii escape along a typically Japanese street just steps from Kichijoji Station.
Kichijoji Petit Mura opened in April 2018 on Nakamichi-dori, a Kichijoji street lined with small shops and restaurants. Petit Mura means "little village," and it stands out from other businesses with its round, colorful buildings that look like they've stepped straight out of a picture book.

🐈 Kingdom of Cats and Kawaii
Visitors enter this enchanting spot through a small wooden gate. The cat 🐈 theme runs through the whole cozy world, unfolding in a whimsical setting that seems designed for tiny characters. Narrow, winding paths lead to the various establishments that make up the village:
- 4 cafés (including one cat café) where you can settle in comfortably for a snack or a drink, also available to go;
- and 4 designer boutiques, one of which can be rented out for special events.
The designer boutiques showcase local artisans selling handmade goods: jewelry, various accessories, stationery, and decorative items, all generally following a modern, cute aesthetic.

🛍️ Relaxing, Instagram-Worthy Shopping in a Ghibli-Like World
Like the rest of the Kichijoji neighborhood, Petit Mura offers a more personal shopping experience than the capital's usual large, sanitized shopping complexes. Whether you're a local resident or an international tourist, you can walk away with a unique yet distinctly Japanese souvenir at a reasonable price.
What's more, strolling between the shops feels like a getaway and is highly photogenic, so much so that overtourism looms over its narrow lanes, especially on weekends and public holidays. The countryside-style setting is especially popular with young Japanese women and couples who enjoy posing there for social media.
Kichijoji Petit Mura brings to mind a mini theme park 🎡 with its fairy-tale castle 🏯 vibe, while also functioning as a genuine, small-scale shopping center. While not a must-see, it offers a charming detour into an animated world whose organic architecture recalls Studio Ghibli, whose museum sits in the nearby Inokashira Park. You can extend the dreamlike experience by stopping for a Totoro cream puff at the Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory bakery southeast of Kichijoji Station, then continue shopping among the thrift shops the neighborhood is known for.
